“I wasn’t ever doing it alone…” (Bootcamp Testimonial)

April 15, 2016 By crossfit.mpls.stp

1) What sparked your interest in a Union Fitness Bootcamp?

I was looking for a defined program to intentionally increase my strength and endurance. I had recently started playing hockey and I realized I needed to be intentional about my physical development if I was going to enjoy the intensity.

2) What were some of your initial reservations to starting bootcamp? How did you overcome them?

I saw other people who “do” CrossFit and it was daunting to think that I would be working out in a facility that was geared for them. I knew I didn’t fit in and I wasn’t as strong. I had to ignore those fears and not let the perceived exclusivity keep me from reaching my goal. I decided to show up and see how it went. It helped that I had friends starting with me, but I would have started alone.

3) Were you satisfied with your bootcamp experience? What did you enjoy most?

Yes, I was satisfied. I most enjoyed that I showed up and there was a workout already prescribed and a coach to help me with the techniques and proper form. The coaches never made me feel like “I can’t”, they always told me ” I can” and that made a significant difference in the success I experienced. I wasn’t ever doing it alone.

4) Why did you decide to start CrossFitting after your time in bootcamp?

Because bootcamp ended and I wasn’t even close to being “done”, (I know now I’ll never be done). I wouldn’t say that I chose to continue into CrossFit classes, but I wanted to keep attending a class, like bootcamp. That meant going to CrossFit class. I knew there was a risk that if I stopped CrossFit I would stop altogether and that wasn’t an option.

Mother of two… has abs! (thanks to CrossFit)

Priorities. Work/life balance. BEING A GOOD MOM!

Ughhh!

This stuff is hard!

Six years ago, right after I had my second child I was struggling to find a way to get back in shape. That’s when a coworker introduced me to this thing called CrossFit and soon after I (hesitantly) gave it a try. Shortly thereafter, I was hooked!

But how the heck was I going to fit in CrossFit as a mom with two small children?!?! I did my best to fit it in whenever I could. Some workouts were at home… or at a globo gym with childcare. Often times I even had to coordinate with my husband so one of us could take the kids! It was tough work. But SO worth it!

LADIES, what wouldn’t you give to be proud of yourself? Truly confident? Thrilled about results at the gym that have nothing to do with a scale? That’s what CrossFit did for me! And that’s what CrossFit can do for you!

I’ll never be the mom with a spotless house or the one taking her kids to 10 different activities a week, but my kids eat like rock stars and are proud of mom and dad’s muscles. Not to mention how much energy we have for our kids (as long as they don’t try to stand on our quads after lots of squats!). CrossFit has definitely made an impact on our family life for the better!

“I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do the exercises…” (bootcamp testimonial)

April 27, 2015 By crossfit.mpls.stp

1) What sparked your interest in a Union Fitness Bootcamp?

“I was interested in CrossFit but was intimidated about my ability to perform the movements and complete the workouts. I’d also grown very tired of my regular workout routines of running, biking and swimming. I wanted strength training and I wanted to get faster.”

2) What were some of your initial reservations in starting bootcamp? How did you overcome them?

“I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do the exercises. The coaches were very encouraging and very good teachers. I credit my tremendous squat to my coach who consistently nagged me to go lower.”

3) Were you satisfied with your bootcamp experience? What did you enjoy most?

“I did four bootcamps, so yes, you could say I was satisfied. Because it was the same group every class, we all got to know each other and there was some accountability to attend. I generally had fun with people while crushing workouts together.”

4) Why did you decide to start CrossFitting after your time in bootcamp?

“It would have been embarrassing to do a fifth. Seriously, I was ready for the next level after having such great experiences with the bootcamps. I felt really comfortable at the gym at that point and I was confident that I could do regular classes. In fact I think that the bootcamps were a great introduction to CrossFit and I’d encourage anyone to start with a bootcamp and then move on to regular (big kid) classes.”

“My initial reservations [to CrossFit]…” (bootcamp testimonial)

April 22, 2015 By crossfit.mpls.stp

1.) What sparked your interest in starting bootcamp?

“I had experience with CrossFit earlier and enjoyed the experience but got away from it. I was looking to bootcamp to get me jumpstarted to that type of short intense fitness sessions again. I also knew Ian and was comfortable with him being the coach 🙂 Essentially I needed something to kick me back into gear, and I knew that jumping right back into CrossFit was something I wasn’t quite ready for or even sure that I wanted to do at the time.”

“My initial reservations [to CrossFit] were whether or not I could handle the workouts. Being familiar with the challenges that come with CrossFit workouts, I was nervous since I was basically starting from scratch with my fitness again. I overcame them by sucking it up and showing up. I surprised myself that I showed up at 6:30 am to do bootcamp!!”

2.) Were you satisfied with your experience? What did you enjoy most?

“Yes I was satisfied with the experience. It was hard, but not too hard that I couldn’t modify or scale as needed. Most of the stuff we did was body weight, so whatever your body style is, that’s what you’re working with. I enjoyed the energy that [my coaches] brought to the workouts and my day, and I really enjoyed the satisfaction that came with being able to accomplish the workouts, even when I thought it was impossible.”

“I returned to CrossFit after bootcamp because I had a renewed confidence that I could in fact handle the workouts. I also needed that time to get my arse back to a level that could handle intense workouts. :)”

-Carla Staffa, current CrossFitter and former bootcamper
