When did you start with CFSP? I can proudly say I am a founding member – began in July of 2009!
What was your prior fitness background before starting CrossFit? How were you introduced to CrossFit?
Before my kids, I was a gym rat- worked out 5-6 times a week, mostly group classes. After the kids, I found it harder to get on a consistent routine, and was generally less motivated. I met Andrea as part of a small group treadmill-based class, and she introduced me to CrossFit. Andrea is a fantastic trainer, and so I was willing to follow her anywhere.
What were your thoughts during your first week of training with us? The biggest challenge for me the first week was wrapping my head around short, more intense workouts. At that point, I was definitely someone in chronic cardio mode: 4x/week running or spinning for 60 minutes. But those workout left me tired. In 15 minutes with CrossFit, I worked to exhaustion, but left great when I left.
Favorite workouts/least favorite workouts? My favorite workouts include anything with a couple of different components, like Fight Gone Bad. And those that count the number of rounds completed in 15 or 20 minutes. My least favorite are the one exercise workouts: Karen (150 Wallballs), 2000m Row, etc.
What kind of perfomance/fitness changes have occured since starting CrossFit? How have some of the benchmark WOD’s changed for you? I’ve definitely changed physically – I’ve lost 15 pounds and dropped body fat. But probably the most important change has been a newfound enjoyment in working out and living a healthy lifestyle. I eat better, sleep better, and feel better. In the last few months, I have noticed significant decreases in benchmark WODs times and/or the ability to do them as prescribed. Seeing these types of improvements keep me motivated!
Any advice for new CrossFitters?
First, be prepared to be surprised, and open to do things you thought you never could. At one point or another over the last 8 months, I have said to myself: I can’t do a pullup, I can’t do a double-under, I can’t deadlift my bodyweight…and I have! Once I got my attitude out of the way, my body found a way to prove me wrong. Second, welcome to a fantastic community of health and wellness! I have enjoyed all of the great people I have met at CFSP – they are inspiring, encouraging, and motivating.
